Today is going to be busy. But I have a special activity to do in the afternoon. I need to make a milk run. In a family with six members alot of milk is drunk.

I have the privilege of living not too far from a dairy. This dairy sells milk the old fashioned way.

I love this part . . . the cream rises to the top and the milk must be shaken before you pour it. It is not homogenized! Since I don't work now I have the time to drive to the dairy and pick up the milk with one or more of my kids. :) A small way that I can pour my life into my children today!

When I was a teenager a family down the road about 3 miles away had a small dairy. I learned to drive going to get milk for Mom. The bleachy smell mixed with the smell of fresh milk brought back memories when we went to the dairy last week.

You could see the cows outback. Swan's Dairy proudly tells in a short brochure they gave me that they do not give their cows steroids. The lady at the register said they are the only old fashioned dairy in a 5 state area. People come from out-of-state to buy milk! Swan's Dairy also makes cheese. I can't wait to get some. Their milk is about 75 cents cheaper than that in the store and I know it is healthier than store-bought.

The milk has a different taste. We're still getting used to that. The interesting thing about home grown milk is the taste is different in the winter than in the summer. In the winter the cows eat hay. In the warmer months they eat green grass.

If you wanted to you could take the cream from the milk put it in a tight-lidded jar and shake it for an hour or so and get homemade butter. It has a richer taste than store bought butter.

I love these old fashioned wholesome activities that I get to do with my kids.
